YouTube for Schools has come up with an easy way for teachers to bring educational video into the classroom without having to worry about students getting access to inappropriate content, which is why it has been blocked from use in the classrooms of most school districts across our country. This will be a relief to many teachers who are in need of new media resources to engage learners that will not cost them a penny to include into their lesson plans.

I could also see this becoming a great tool for distance learners as well. The closer we get to schools without walls the better. I am definitely going to inquire about getting this setup at Duke Ellington. I’m sure our academic teachers could use this in our school’s Media Center when giving presentations. I haven’t given it a test run yet, but I wonder if teachers will have access to annotations and YouTube.com/create with all of its third party features.

If you are using or are planning to use YouTube for Schools please share your experience with us. Once I have given it a test I will give you an update on the product. Thanks for reading. Like this kind of content? Subscribe and please share Techtasters with your network.

About circles

“Google+ Circles helps you organize everyone according to your real-life social connections—say, ‘family,’ ‘work friends,’ ‘music buddies,’ and ‘alumni’. Then, you can share relevant content with the right people, and follow content posted by people you find interesting. For example, you might post an announcement about your engagement and show it only to people in your friends and family circles, or maybe you see a post from the circle you created for your book club that there’s a recent article on your favorite author.” - Google+ Project

This is a great interactive video produced by the Coca-Cola company that creates interest around the mysterious ingredients of the popular beverage. Throughout the video you can click keyhole bottles to unlock secrets which takes viewers on an Internet scavenger hunt for clues.

Reggie Watts is my new favorite sound machine! Smart, soulful, and poetic he takes beat-making to the next level. I love that this video works backwards.

Check out his website for more video, sounds, and other goodies. You can purchase his album Why $#!+ So Crazy from Amazon too.

Wow! I think I just found a solution for Duke Ellington students and community that will help us collect content for our Literary Media & Communications website, as well as create community engagement through crowdsourcing. Ky’Lend Adams a 2nd year sophomore at Ellington in my Video & Web Media class came to me with the desire to relaunch and manage our department YouTube channel LMC TV. He wanted a way to feature all of the Arts Departments at Ellington that would drive awareness and interest to potential funders and the general community.

I thought about using DropBox or Drop.io to crowdsource video but this is a much better alternative because it accesses YouTube and its vast community of users. YouTube Direct will allow video produced by or featuring Duke Ellington students already on YouTube to be collected and shared in a more purposeful way that will benefit the school.

Now if I could just get YouTube unblocked in my classroom…
